Warmachine and Hordes

Many of you have probably noticed a lack of posts from yours truly here at the farm, while I have remained vocal on the podcasts when it comes to our SMITE talks. Well today, I’m going to explain a little bit about why.

I’ve started playing table-top miniature games. The culprit in question is from Washington locals, Privateer Press called Warmachine & Hordes or colloquially, Warmahordes. It features multiple factions clashing together in a highly detailed 30mm heroic scale world for dominance in an on going story-line to determine the fate of Immoren.

The game has 10 main factions, with 2 additional factions that comprise the multitude of banner-less fighters that are willing to align themselves with either the forces of Warmachine which feature giant robots led by powerful battle wizards or conversely with the warlocks of the Hordes who channel the fury of monster beasts to cast their spells.

Models range from 30mm being the smallest or ‘man-sized’ to 40mm, 50mm, or even 120mm which are some of the largest creatures and constructs available to any army. Functionally, the game works using a combination of models with corresponding character or figure cards which provide basic stats and a plethora of rules which allow the game to become very competitive. Players take rotating turns on a 4’x4′ table attempting to either dominate the objective in whatever scenario they are playing or manipulate their forces in such a way as to assassinate the enemy leader.

Out of the multitude of factions available, you can choose between such forces as an army of bipedal Gatormen or the warthog based Farrow, desert based religious zealots of Menoth, the monsterous dragon forces of the Legion of Everblight, or the ‘Team America’ of Warmachine, Cygnar. There are options for any type of play style from agressive alpha strikes to meticulous planning and control.

I love this game, so much so that I would say the only downside is that I’ve developed a serious addiction to painting and collecting models. I never thought I would be playing table-top, but I’ve discovered I have both a talent for painting and love throwing down dice any day of the week. So if you’re looking for a new hobby that will bring a physical and new social aspect to your gaming, look no further. Warmahordes is where it’s at.
