South Park The Stick of Truth review

Alright dickbutts, I guess I’m going to have to do a South Park The Stick of Truth review for any of those who still haven’t tried the turn based RPG yet. Delayed and then overshadowed by a next generation console war it wasn’t apart of, South Park: The Stick of Truth kind of fell to the wayside. It was a game I was excited about from the get go but became disinterested as it was delayed time and time again. Well, the early stages of the next gen console wars are in full swing but just dull enough where I was able to take some time out of my busy schedule and review the shit out of this South Park purists wet dream.

I say South Park: The Stick of Truth is a purists wet dream because its full of rich and disturbing South Park history, starting in the later days of my adolescence and into my earlier days of adult hood I never missed one episode of South Park, sure as I went away to college and actually started touching women’s nether regions my love affair with the show withered away, but I never actually stopped paying attention to the show’s content, so I recognized and enjoyed a lot of the games jokes. The strength of South Park: The Stick of Truth isn’t all in it’s relationship with the show, it’s actually a very competent turn based RPG as well.

Touting the classic RPG feel, South Park: The Stick of Truth has a QTE, party turn based system. Create your character, choose what class you want to play: Fighter, Mage, Assassin, or Jew, grab your favorite party member, hit a button at the right time when it’s your turn, drink some coffee to add a turn, and revive your buddy with a taco. You know, your typical RPG fare.

Everything about South Park: The Stick of Truth‘s recipe works too. With Rich bibliography of fiction to choose from, they created a story from historical fiction, then stirred in a basic and competent combat system and baked it to perfection. Maybe not perfect, but pretty damn tasty. The things that are completely apparent is that this is a South Park game first and an RPG second, but it works. When you’re farting on people, collecting Chinpokemon, resisting alien anal probes, battling nazi zombies, and defusing bombs in Mr Slaves colon you completely forget your actually leveling up your character in the process. It takes a special something to make you forget that your actually playing a story based video game, farts usually do it, but South Park: The Stick of Truth luckily has so much more than just fart jokes.

So, can South Park: The Stick of Truth be a go to RPG for someone who’s never actually seen the show? Yes, if they like to laugh. This is not your JRPG or Elder Scrolls serious RPG though, it’s a tongue in cheek ode to a classic genre. I finished with my Jew class, looking a lot like Jesus, and feeling like I wanted to play the game all over again with a different class. South Park: The Stick of Truth has enough choices, enough equipment, and enough stuff to do around South Park the replayability is astounding. Sure I may skip a few cutscenes here and there, but my laughter and smiles keep me driving on. That and the Frog King, Sparrow Prince, and Catatafish drive me forward also, such great life coaches.
