EA Access, EA’s Subscription Service
News, news, news, we hate EA, blah, blah, blah, well let’s take a look at this shall we.
EA recently announced, and I mean announced like yesterday, I was just way too lazy to write anything then so we get my snarky comments now about why EA shouldn’t be trying to finagle that much more money out of my skinny little wallet.
EA Access is EA’s subscription service currently in beta for only the Xbox One, PlayStation being the stand up characters they are (at least in this light) told EA to pound sand stating, ” it [EA Access] does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect.” Huzzah Sony.
EA Access will be $5 a month or $30 a year, which is the 7/11 energy drink logic of one energy drink for $3.50 or two for $5, why wouldn’t you buy two? So EA already out of the gate is expecting your $30. These games will come out of their extensive vault, although right now it looks less like Scrooge McDuck and more like my savings account with “The Vault” only granting you four games to play: Battlefield 4 (broken), Madden 25, Fifa 14 (the most played sports game on the planet), and Peggle 2 (a game that should only be worth $5 period).
While this isn’t a good value right now, I mean you would be stupid to pay any money for this content as it stands right now, even with 10% off upcoming EA titles and five days of early access to select EA titles. My problem with this is always the slippery slope. I already pay $60 for Xbox Gold, $50 for PS Plus, $15 or whatever it is for Netflix, and $11 for GameFly, why the hell would I want to pay $30 more for EA games I can’t keep and wont own?
Now let’s say this subscription service is a big hit, which I doubt it will be, but I’ve been wrong many, many, many times before, now we have EA, Ubisoft, and Activision subscription services just raping our wallets. No thank you.
There is an upside to this service though, and it stands in the hands of the sports gamer, specifically the Madden gamer. Why buy the same game every year over and over again when you can spen $30 a year and simply download it. That’s already a 50% savings every year for your cut and paste Madden title.
Good luck and godspeed gamers, these are dark times.
