2015 Las Vegas Super Toy Con
Last weekend (February 27-March 1st) a small expo touched down here in Las Vegas, one filled with smells and memories of the past. The 2015 Las Vegas Super Toy Con, less of a convention and more of a large room, stuffed itself into the bowels of the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino. Although that doesn’t sound pretty, it was definitely a sight to behold.
Everything about the 2015 Las Vegas Super Toy Con for me was story worthy. From the grouchy security lady who gave me wrong directions to the unmarked con, to seeing the orange glow of Ric Flair in person. Yes, Ric Flair was at a toy convention for some reason, this isn’t a complaint, just facts.
The Super Toy Con’s convention room was at first very overwhelming. The large room was literally filled to the brim, from top to bottom and spanning into every nook and cranny, no space unused, a toy collectors dream. Each vendor had things from Hot Wheels, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Star Wars, and G.I. Joes, spanning to the many rare and obscure toys of the 80’s, it was all incredible.
I did come into the 2015 Las Vegas Super Toy Con with a few ideas of what I was going to spend my cash (or credit) on, although I wasn’t able to find any of the DC Super Powers figures (besides Martian Manhunter, seriously, who wants that dude?) I did walk out of there with quite the hall, and without spending too much money either. I managed to snag all of the Big Trouble in Little China Funko ReAction figures, the Star Wars Boba Fett Prototype Armor black series, the G.I. Joe firefighter Barbecue, some sick ass 80’s glasses from Regular Show (which you can see a cooler version of in Big Trouble in Little China), and some vintage 1973 Sesame Street characters including the Count who looks just too groovy.
The 2015 Las Vegas Super Toy Con was so much more than I could ever have expected, I’m so glad I actually went there, with money, to check everything out. It also matters who you attend these things with, my buddy Jared is a wealth of information when it came to some of the many retro Ninja Turtle toys. I try not to spend too much on toys, but I’m a nerd, I love collecting things, and it felt really good to add some worth while pieces to my collection without breaking the bank. Super Toy Con, I’m on to you, see you next year.
