Day 1 of this years PAX was probably the best PAX I’ve been to yet, I may have had a Media badge this time, but I feel that it only helped a little bit. For those not familiar with PAX Prime, PAX is a nerd expo held in Seattle each year around labor day and is put on by the guys over at pennyarcade.com. The expo is everything nerd and for nerds. Gaming, tabletop games, card games, and famous appearances are abound. It’s very crowded, the people are nice, and expect to wait in lines, but the things you see and play will stick in your memory for years to come.
My first stop was The Last of Us booth, knowing that this line will soon be six hours long lead me here first. Being fifth in line still made the wait 40 minutes, but the gnarly set and the new demo made it all worth it. The Last of Us looked and sounded incredible. Naughty Dog showed off some of Joel’s stealth and new highlighted objects for movement. The Last of Us is very “Naughty Dog” with contrasting colors of greens and rust creating a beautiful post apocalyptic world. The combat system is unique and I still don’t know how it’s going to work, there are no prompts and there’s a lot of different combat cinematics, only time will tell I guess.
After leaving The Last of Us I was literally grabbed by the guys showing off Medal of Honor and was dragged into their new multiplayer fps. Medal of Honor: Warfighter was a surprisingly deep military shooter. It’s newest Fire Team dynamic made playing with your partner essential. In your Fire Team you can heal and refill ammo from your teammate next you, and, if an enemy kills your partner and you immediately kill his murder, your teammate will be risen from the dead, not as a zombie, just returning to the battlefield from where he fell. There aren’t kill streaks, but rather combo awards for completing objects. These awards range from Warthog airstrikes, mortars, radar jammers, and more. The fighting was actually so intense that I rarely noticed I had racked up quite a few of these combos. Because I pick up fps shooters fairly easy, our team won, and my fire team were number one on the map…snoochies.
Konami brought Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to the show, and it was playable! Get ready to throw stealth into the trash can and ninja sprint to chop enemies to pieces. It’s a typical hack and slash, with the exception of a “Katana” mode that allows you to slow time and relieve all your tension by getting 80+ combos as you chop an enemy to pieces. Oh and Hideo Kojima himself will be here at PAX on Saturday…
PAX isn’t known for it’s cosplay, but it also wouldn’t be complete without it. Here’s Nic with one of the more impressive Mass Effect cosplay from this years show. Expect more cosplay in our PAX gallery on Facebook later this week.
