During a midnight premiere showing of the Dark Knight Rises last night in Aurora, Colorado, a gunman opened fire in the theater killing 12 and injuring up to 50 others.
BBC News reports 12 have been confirmed dead, 10 found on scene and two others died in the hospital secondary to sustained injuries. Up to 50 other victims, including a 4 month-old and six year old girl, were taken to four hospitals and have been treated for gun shot wounds and chemical exposures.
It’s reported that the gunman was a 24 year old Aurora native, and said to have been captured by authorities in a car park near the theater with a gas mask, rifle and hand gun. Holmes was said to have thrown tear gas in theater 9 of the Century 16 cinema during a gun fight scene coinciding with the film. Some people believed it was a stunt put on by the theater for the midnight release, and others began to panic after its said the gunman was “slowly making his way up the stairs and just firing – picking random people”.
This is a sickening and tragic event. Nerd Farm usually doesn’t post about events like this, but I felt it was appropriate that everyone put their thoughts and prayers, or whatever your belief is, to the victims and their families in Aurora.
The loss of life over a movie premiere is obviously the most tragic part of this, but it also saddens me that it happened at a Batman movie premiere. An event celebrated with costumes from passionate and excited fans. It is my hope that this event will not spoil what makes coming to these movie premieres so fun.
