Are you like me? Probably. I mean if you like the old school experience: Top down shooters in outer space with an almost 16 bit feel. Velocity delivers. You’re a pilot on a mission, rescuing trapped survivors, dodging obstacles and taking down whatever is in your way.
I really like the whole feel of this game, because it really takes me back to gaming as a child, when everything was fresh and new, in a time before 3D and polygons. Game play consists of scrolling up (because you didn’t see that coming already) and shooting various blocking units, with the main goal of each level to rescue as many of the trapped survivors as possible. Now you have the ability to boost your engines, BUT you may miss survivors on your way to speed up each level. So the real mechanic in my opinion is the teleportation. You can zip instantly through objects and walls to snag extra survivors and bonus trophies as well.
Toss in a totally kick ass retro style soundtrack that drives during the missions and you got an instant classic in Velocity. I hope to see more companies putting out stuff like this in the future, it really takes older gamers back to the golden age of games and allows new, younger gamers to experience a small bit of what games used to be like back in the day before DLC, and Kill/Death ratios.
Available to PSNPlus subscribers for free this month, Velocity is that old school classic that you just don’t want to miss! Even better still, you can play it on your PS3, PS Vita or PSP! Check the video!
