Gearbox Gives You Hidden Treasure in Captain Scarlett DLC.

The first mission based DLC coming quickly after the patch and release of the Mechromancer class, Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty takes you to the soft flowing sands of Oasis. Yes, those sands are filled with annoying and ferocious sand worms, but what self respecting desert doesn’t have those anyways. Your search for Captain Blake’s treasure spans across all forms of dusty country, and you must team up with, and then expect the inevitable back stabbing from the strangely seductive Captain Scarlett. She does have a way about her, just ask Herbit, I think that’s his name, spoiler, he’s dead.

Quite possibly the greatest DLC in the Borderlands universe since General Knoxx, Captain Scarlett is almost a completely new experience. The only things similar are you and your weapons. Gearbox Software pulled out all the stops and created a completely new downloadable paradise just for you. Really by paradise I mean wasteland, and by you, I of course mean everyone who buys it, but those are just technicalities, don’t get too involved with “logic” and “words”. The loot is far superior, a gift if you will for purchasing the DLC, enemies are new and even the speeders are replaced by incredibly cool sand skiffs, or hovercrafts if you want to be an uncool dick. Every character you meet is as strange and zany as you’d expect, Shade being one unintentionally hilarious take on Raoul Duke, the “this is bat country” dude from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, for those not in the know.

Besides brand new enemies, something I really loved out of the DLC was it’s new music, which I can only describe as “Pirate Dub Step” in moments of intense combat. When just traversing the landscape and the incredibly cool pirate towns, your ears are greeted with soft twanging ukuleles like your resting on a beach near the ocean. Even in a focused state, this music transcended my concentration and always made me smile. It’s something you often don’t think about, but they composed this music just for the DLC. It’s the small things that let you know care was put into Captain Scarlett.

The DLC in all of it’s entirety is multiple hours of gameplay, then of course a final boss that drops exceptional loot after you successfully complete it. For the $10 price of admission, or the $30 from Season Pass holders, Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty is a gift that keeps on giving. It’s a bevy of awesome and hysterical content. There are times when DLC seems forced and unworthy of a Season Pass, but Gearbox has proven their a company for the people. Do not miss your chance to take on Anchormen and Cursed Pirates (which are the scariest fruggin things in any game since Big Daddy *hint*) and the opportunity to pretend your floating around the desert sands of Tatooine as a vulnerable young man traveling the universe under the tutelage of an old man claiming to be your uncle after only hours of knowing him.

Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty is available now for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC for $10 or $30 as part of the even more desirable Season Pass.
