Maybe it’s me, maybe it’s the fact that I have been playing games for a long time, or maybe it’s just the fact that Dungeon Fighters: Live uses 2D sprites, but I can’t help think that DF:L is this generations Golden Axe. Dungeon Fighter: Live was one of the games that kind of had me excited at last years PAX, but thanks to the larger titles, it kind of got pushed out of recent memory until this last Tuesday when it dropped for XBLA.
The game functions basically from a hub where upon you select missions from the various merchants and characters you happen to come across or rescue. The loot system seems to draw very heavily upon a kind of Diablo variant where in items are generated semi randomly. You can also use a sort of lottery item with pots you can collect that will give you a random item based on class when you break it.
Once you have selected your class out of the 3: Slayer, Gunner and Fighter then you can set about traversing various “dungeons” which are just grid based levels that are displayed in the upper right hand corner of your screen. They last about 10 to 15 minutes from what I have seen and throw countless bad guys and loot your way.
The classes don’t seem to offer very much difference in means of play, but that is yet to be seen till the later levels of the characters. The Slayer is the typical sword bearing man at arms who can juggle enemies with a one handed sword which can be upgraded to larger and deadlier versions of itself, the Gunner is a ranged character who uses pistols and chain guns (and I think even a cross bow) then there is the Fighter who is a tough young woman who chooses to let her fists do the talking.
In any case, I think the price is right on this one. Dungeon Fighter: Live is $10 and will keep you entertained with enough hack and slash action to prevent you from seeing the sunlight this summer. Just make sure you have a few good friends to adventure with or you might see the shiny newness of this title wear off quicker than normal.
