The Avengers have held their ground until this very moment. The Phoenix force that started as five has dwindled down to one after Scott Summers stole what was left of it from Emma Frost, murdered his only one true friend Professor Xavier, and sent himself into a Dark Phoenix state. The Avengers with their backs to the wall must do whatever they can to save not only themselves, but all of humanity.

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and in the case of the Avengers vs. X-Men series, all great things. The final showdown is one that I feel everyone expected, but in the process of coming to a close, had me almost doubting this series would come to an end under fair terms. The battle’s between the Avengers and Summers are dramatically epic. The Hulk gets socked in the face in Sydney and comes crashing down in Sacramento, and Thor gets blasted into Earth’s upper atmosphere. The damage being done is felt and heard, and abruptly ends with a mighty clash of titans.
The ending is not a rebirth for mutants like previous Phoenix storylines, but it does lead smoothly into the Marvel NOW story arc. Avengers vs X-Men Round 12 wasn’t my favorite AvX issue, and it has arguably the worst cover out of the entire series (I would strongly advise to pick up a variant cover), but it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. You never quite know what’s going to happen, and when it does, you’re still pleasantly surprised.
Complaints will be had that this series had a lot of filler, but I’ll argue right now, that it has been one of the most exciting reads I’ve read in a while and one I impatiently looked forward to every issue. Minus of course Brubaker and Phillips’ FATALE series that’s both gripping and haunting.
