Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you just happen to be at the right place at the right time, in our case at this years PAX Prime, we achieved both of these. Taking a shot in the dark we headed over to the Double Fine booth and asked if we could do an interview and play Kinect Party with one of Double Fine‘s fine developers, Drew Skillman happily obliged. That’s the lucky part, doing the interview and playing Kinect Party while the legend Tim Schafer signs autographs beside us was our right place, right time part. Saying we were a little excited was an understatement.
Kinect Party is the sequel to Double Fine’s Happy Action Theater that came out earlier this year and was easily the best party game for kids and drunk adults. Kinect Party adds an additional 18 party games with emphasis on costuming and crazy psychokinetic colors sure to make any person an epileptic. Of course my favorite is the “Dubstep” game that instantly turns you into a disc spinning DJ or jam bumping robot.
Expect to see Kinect Party hopefully by the end of this year.
This interview came after a very physical and engrossing game of Johann Sebastion Joust, Drew was still able to maintain a great interview and an even stronger Kinect Party performance. After the interview he enlightened me about the Jackson Special School in St. Albans, Australia using Happy Action Theater to help students with special needs. It’s something that’s incredibly cool and very promising for any developer using the Kinect technology to it’s fullest potential.
