“Exodus”
The Punk Rock Jesus series from Sean Murphy has dabbled in the frightening future of reality TV. PRJ left off last issue with Gwen drifting further and further into depression, Chris performing fixed “miracles”, and Thomas doing what he can to keep Gwen safe and sane. Remember all of this, because issue #3 is full throttle in your face.
After Thomas and Gwen’s narrow escape from the NAC, Slate puts his thumb down on security and takes full control of the J2 island. Chris grows older and almost dies trying to perform one of his so called “miracles”. Gwen and Chris’ love for each other is both a blessing and a burden as it ends up putting Gwen in a Mental Institution and sends Chris on a rampage. There Gwen get’s a wake up call from a very, very, very unexpected guest. I could have added another very, just know that this guest’s appearance is incredibly shocking.
Sean Murphy has made Punk Rock Jesus one of my favorite reads. I look forward to it every week. It’s a book I pick up and see real characters with real emotions. No one has super powers and everyone is vulnerable in their own way. I’ve spoken freely about it’s eerie surrealism to real life reality shows which make it dangerous and exciting, like looking over the edge of a really tall building. It’s not watching a train wreck, it’s experiencing it, and living through it.
