Something has bothered me since I started reading I, Vampire, one of the many “New 52” reboots from DC Comics, I’m not sure why it’s bothering me, it just…is. Why does I,Vampire confuse me so much? Some are quick on the trigger and would say I’m stupid, and they may be right in that regard, but as one of DC’s 10th least selling New 52 books, I can’t be the only one.
I,Vampire in short is a book of vampires vs the DC universe. Andrew Stanton (Bennett) has kept the world safe from supernatural foes and his ex-lover Mary, the Queen of the Damned for hundreds of years. Mary, disenchanted by the world has formed a vampire army bent on reclaiming the world, even if it means killing some of DC’s finest heroes. Sounds cool right? And honestly it really is, but those aspects are vaguely referenced in issue one. It isn’t until issue five when you get to see Batman, among others. I know this because I cheated and skimmed through the trade, consisting of issues 1-5.
You’re telling me, the collaboration I’ve been waiting for, with the hint of even more at the “New 52″ panel at Las Vegas Comic Expo, are only going to have the heroes making cameos? I’m hurt DC. That’s only part of it, why does Andrew look like a werewolf? Is he a werewolf? I thought he was a vampire. Mary looks like a vampire, so what is Andrew? My questions just keep piling up, and I’m unsure if I’m going to continue to read this series because it makes my feeble brain hurt. Joshua Hale Fialkov does such a great job writing and Andrea Sorrentino has such fantastic art, it’s a shame I’m so dumbfounded. After all that ranting, I throw in one sentence and almost completely change my mind, maybe I’ll still read I,Vampire after all.
[UPDATE]
By some form of fate, Joshua Hale Fialkov was scouring the internets for anything I, Vampire and was nice enough to enlighten me on the whole changing form aspect of Andrew Stanton. Fialkov is using the Dracula mythology, giving Stanton the ability to “become bats, wolves, and any combination in between.” Thanks Joshua Hale Fialkov!

Hey –
I’m using Dracula mythology. Vampires can control their form. This means they can become bats, wolves, and any combination in between.
Thanks for reading!

This is awkward… but I am much less confused now.
