Howard Chaykin’s exploration into 20th century fetish and eroticism continues in Black Kiss 2 issue 3. If you haven’t been paying attention to this highly controversial book, Chaykin has essentially brought deep dark desires to the forefront, giving a succubus fuel for her unending hunger for sex. And death.
The inclusion of the Nazi’s occupation of France is just par for the course in Black Kiss 2. The book is less about shock factor now, and I’ve sadly become numb to the list of uneasy images. The laundry list is long, and can almost be put into a check list, with issue #3 covering more dicks getting bit off, gang rape, butt rape, and sexual torture. Don’t be fooled by the overly sadistic images though, there is a story hidden within BK2, and I’m beginning to think it involves ones love for their self, or her self, or itself, as a doppelganger. Yes, follow me on this.
If you read deeper into the pages of Black Kiss 2, hidden beneath the blood and sex, there is some really great lettering. Yes, I pulled out the lettering card, which I rarely do, but it’s true, the lettering by Ken Bruzenak adds to the already impressive art. Scenes with music get translucent notes scattered around the frames, and frames involving certain Germans have a very deutsche like font for sounds. It’s just something I noticed and enjoyed in an already artistically strong book. I can’t recommend this series to everyone, but the adventurous and those who dare push the limits of decency can read it and enjoy it for what it is.
